The Presence of the Lord
Nehemiah 8

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

I’m sure many of you have heard that the football stadium in Stillwater has been renamed. The new “T. Boone Pickens Stadium” is going to be absolutely beautiful once it is completed. I’m not sure if you have heard that there have been some other changes made as well. As a matter of fact, the changes that are coming to Stillwater this football season are also coming to Norman as well. The Board of Regents have made some policy changes for all state colleges that will be implemented in the upcoming football season. The changes have been leaked and I want to share some of them with you this morning.

Come Into His Presence
Leviticus 16; Hebrews 4:14-16

Several years ago, when the boys were small, Connie and I bought our first swing set. We went to the store and found just the right swing set — not too big and overbearing, not too small and childish, but one that was just right. We loaded the big box in the back of my truck and headed home. We got home, unloaded the box, and put all of the pieces in their proper place as we prepared to assemble what looked like the Eiffel Tower in pieces. For most people the journey of life is too important to embark upon without some kind of instruction. At a young age our parents enroll us in school so that we can learn to read, write, add and subtract. As we grow older we take classes on subjects as varied as Physical Education, Home Economics, World History, Psychology, Sociology, and Calculus. If we decide to continue our education beyond high school, then our studies become more specialized as we seek to gain more and more insight in one specific area of study. The classes that are made available to us help us understand that there is a wealth of knowledge which can be used as tools to enhance our lives as we grow and mature. The classes enable us to better understand our relationships, our future avenues of employment, and the world around us. We need understanding. I can’t imagine what life would be like if we had no instruction to help us with the complexity of it all.

It’s summertime and many folks are going on vacation at this time of year. Wherever you are planning on going you really need a map. If you or I want to arrive at our destination then we need a map. It doesn’t matter whether you are going to Seattle, Washington or Sarasota, Florida, Napa Valley, California or New York, New York—you need to have a map in order to get there.
