The Snow of God’s Grace

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

It’s been such an incredible day!  Thursdays are my day to stay home and write the sermon for Sunday. I’ve been studying “God’s judgment” in Revelation 14:13-20 all week long. Revelation 14:13-20 is not one of the “feel good” passages of God’s Word, but it is God’s Word. I’ve learnd so much about God’s judgment from my study. I’ve often thought this week about the countless times that I’ve been told by people that they struggle with the “God of wrath in the Old Testament” and how He fits with the “Jesus of grace in the New Testament.”  I understand what they mean, but I don’t agree. Wrath and forgiveness, judgment and forgiveness are all throughout God’s Word. We don’t like words like “wrath” and “judgment” because we know that we are guilty and our pride prevents us from owning up to what we have done.

God’s “wrath” and “judgment” are set alongside of His “grace” and “forgiveness” and if we ever try and separate the two we will morph God into something He is not. The tragedy of our times is that all too often in our society we see this mangled image of God as we try to make God more acceptable, more politically correct, more tolerable to an unbelieving society.

We have to remember that it was God’s justice, His judgment, that put Jesus on the cross. It was not Jesus’ sin that led Him to the cross, but mine. Because God is just there had to be justice. For God to wink His eye at my sin would make God less than just.  God did more than wink at my sin, He offered His Son to right that which I had made wrong by my sin. Isaiah wrote,8 “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:8 NIV)

I love Isaiah’s imagery. My sins are horrid. My failures have haunted me. I have quoted Paul’s words so often, “Why do I do what I don’t want to do and why do I fail to do that which I know I should?”  Do those words ring a bell with you?  When we get real about who we are, how we have failed, and why we keep messing up in the same ways over and over again we can easily become overwhelmed with our guilt can’t we?  Sure we can.

The good news is this: though are sins are as scarlet they will be made as white as snow! What powerful words. Through the shed blood of our Savior our sins are covered like my backyard has been covered with a beautiful blanket of snow. I don’t see the “scars” in my yard, all I see is a beautiful, pure white blanket of what God has done throughout the day as I went about my business. This is what He has done for you and me as well. Our cleansing is not our work, it is God’s. Our forgiveness is not our work, it is God’s. All of God. I’m grateful for the “snow” of God’s grace is my life aren’t you?

Sunday’s Gonna Be A BIG Day!

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Hi Everyone,

I hope your week has started off with heaps of hope and an assurance that God is going to lead you through the week by His Sovereign hand. I want to urge you to mark your calendar for this coming Sunday, December 3. We are going to have a huge day that you will not want to miss. Let me just list what’s going to take place this coming Sunday at BCC.

* Sunday morning we are going to share in the baptisms of DaQuan Lee, and Gabby and Ray Ray Arechiga. We are also going to get to share with Jack and Alison Counts and their family as they dedicate their beautiful twins, Chloe and Carter, to the Lord.

* Immediatly following worship our Children’s Ministry will have a “Bake Sale” with lots of scrumptious homemade treats for everyone. All proceeds from the Bake Sale will go towards the Children’s Ministry.

* We will let you catch your breath Sunday afternoon, but you will want to come back to church for our outstanding Children’s Christmas Musical, “A Star Is Born.” Immediately following the younger children the Middle School and High School kids will present their Youth Choir/Drama and Dance Christmas Program. All of these kids have been working so hard for the past many weeks preparing for this Sunday.  I want to encourage everyone to come out and join us in supporting our kids. We have the greatest group of kids in the whole world at BCC and this is our opportunity to show them how much we appreciate them.

* At 7:15 pm we will decorate our sanctuary in the “Hanging of the Greens” service. It is a short, but beautiful service explaining the significance and symbolism of the decorations for Christmas.

* Last of all, at 7:45 pm we will go to the gym for the “Tasting Bee.” I’ve been at BCC for many years and I still don’t know what “Bee’s” have to do with the great food we will be eating. Anyway, you won’t want to miss the greatest homemade finger foods and snacks that you will find anywhere. We want to encourage everyone to bring their favorite dish to share.

Let’s start the Christmas Season off right. Join us on Sunday as we worship the Lord in a variety of ways, young and old alike.

In His Steps,

Mike

In All Circumstances…
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and yet for many among us today “giving thanks” seems like a distant prospect. There are so many folks among us who are in the midst of trials and heartache. Some of you have lost loved ones during the past year, others have lost marriages during the past year, and many of you have lost hope for anything better than you are presently experiencing. You’re aware that Thanksgiving is upon us and you’ve been asking yourself, “How can I give thanks when my heart has been broken and my hopes have been shattered?  That’s a great question and I want us to spend some time this morning trying to understand how we can give thanks this Thanksgiving “in all circumstances.” Before we do that I want to give you a little background on the day that has been set aside as a “day of thanks” in our nation. I want to take the time to do this because many in our society today view Thanksgiving as purely a secular holiday, a day set aside strictly for getting together with friends and family, watching football, and eating some great food.

The War Continues!
Ephesians 6:10-18

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

I am a soldier, a prayer warrior, in the army of my God.
The Lord Jesus Christ is my Commanding Officer.
The Holy Bible is my code of conduct.
Faith, Prayer, and the Word are my weapons of warfare.
I have been taught by the Holy Spirit, trained by experience, tried by adversity, and
tested by fire.
I am enlisted in His army for eternity and I will not turn back.
I will not get out, sell out, or be talked out.
I will be faithful, capable, and dependable.
When I am called to action, I will stand at attention, act with precision, and serve with devotion.
I am a soldier, a prayer warrior. I am not a baby.
I do not need to be pampered, petted, primed up, pumped up, picked up, or pepped up.
I am a soldier, a prayer warrior.
No one has to call me, remind me, write me, visit me, entice me, or lure me.
I am a soldier, a prayer warrior. I am not a wimp.
I will stand my post. Saluting my King, obeying His orders, praising His name, and
building His Kingdom.
I am a soldier, a prayer warrior.
No one has to send me flowers, gifts, food, cards, candy, or handouts.
I do not need to be cuddled, cradled, coddled, cared for, or catered to.
I am committed.
I cannot have my feelings hurt bad enough to turn me back.
I cannot be discouraged enough to turn me aside.
I cannot suffer enough to cause me to quit.
When Jesus called me into His army, I had nothing.
If I leave the field of battle with nothing then I still come out ahead.
My God shall supply all of my needs. I shall win because my Savior is the Victor. I am
His soldier.

Forever and Ever
Revelation 14:6-12

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

How long is eternity? Someone once tried to describe forever in this way. Once every one thousand years a sparrow flies into the desert and lands on a solid block of granite one mile wide, one mile long, and one mile tall. The sparrow sits for one minute and sharpens his beak on the edge of the block of granite and then flies away. One thousand years later a sparrow flies in, sits on the edge of the block of granite, and sharpens his beak. This is repeated throughout the ages until the sequence of sparrows sharpening their beaks wears the block of granite down to nothing. When the block of granite is gone you will have experienced the beginning of eternity.
