I’m Praying For You

Friday, March 30th, 2007
Good Morning,
I am praying for you. I often send out emails asking you to pray for folks in our church who are going through difficult times, but today I’m writing to let you know that I am praying for you. I’m not praying for you to have strength as you endure difficult times, but I am praying for the Lord to use you to be a godly influence in the lives of those He has put into your life. We often hear how we are being negatively influenced through the media. Cultural commentators lambaste the destructive influence of music, video games, and lax morals on our kids. I see the same things they see, but I also see a power far greater than negative influence in our society–the power of one. One person who believes that he or she is being called by God to touch the lives of others for the Kingdom is a far greater influence than the negative influences taking place in our society. Think of the difference you and I could make if each of the 400 people who call Britton Christian Church home decided to allow the Lord to use us to make a difference in one person’s life today! A life could be transformed, a heart changed, a marriage reconciled, an addiction broken–all because someone responded to God’s call with “Here I am Lord send me!”
In just over one week we will celebrate Easter–the single greatest event in the history of the world. One life given and a world changed! One Man surrendered to God and countless lives transformed. In this broken world in which we live there are countless people in our city who never frequent the church, but Easter Sunday is the one day of the year that they are more willing to go to church than any other, if someone will invite them. I am praying that you will be in prayer today. Ask the Lord to put people you know on your heart who do not know the Lord. Ask the Lord to give you the courage to invite them to go to church with you on Easter Sunday. You will be amazed what will happen if you will step out of your comfort zone and allow the Lord to use you.
In His Steps,
Mike

Through The Eyes of Faith
Joshua 1:1-9

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

This past week I had the time of my life with the kids of Britton Christian Church and their sponsors.  A trip like we took takes a lot of planning and work and Ray Arechiga did an outstanding job! Way to go Ray!  The adults who went along with us went above and beyond the call of duty all week as they helped kids with everything imaginable. I stand in amazement at the number of folks God has led to this church who truly have a servant’s heart. To each of the adults who went with us—a big “Thank You!”  Last of all, I want to let you know that this group of kids were so well-behaved, so helpful and cooperative, and some of the quickest learners that I’ve ever seen. We had a lot of first timers go with us this year and it can be pretty scary staring up at that big mountain and thinking about falling, I mean skiing, all the way down the hill. These kids were troopers with a capital “T.”  They were courageous and didn’t let their fears rule over them. To say that it was a great trip is simply not saying enough.

Spring Break On The Slopes
Pray For Our Kids

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

At 2 am Sunday morning, while you are tucked in your bed and sawing logs, a group of 50 kids and their sponsors from BCC will load the bus and head to Durango Mountain Resort for three days of skiing! This is the seventh year that we’ve taken kids from our church to the mountains of Colorado for Spring Break. I’ve been on the last three trips and I can tell you that it is one of the most wonderful opportunities we have during the year to share the Gospel with our young people. We would greatly appreciate it if you would begin praying today for the Lord to use this opportunity to touch the hearts of our kids.

I believe that our Spring Break Ski Trip is a unique opportunity for a couple of reasons. First, many of these kids are going skiing for the first time, many of them have never seen a mountain, and they will be confronted with a huge mountain and a racing heart on their first day in Colorado. Fear and anxiety will greet them the first time they get off the chair lift and stare down the slope. We will use this opportunity to teach them that through Christ they can do it. We will also use the experience to help show them that through the Lord they can overcome any obstacle, any fear, that they might experience in life. What a great opportunity! The second reason that our trip is such a unique opportunity to share Christ with kids is that we will have Bible study with them in the morning and evening. They won’t have Ipods, video games, cell phones, or any of the normal distractions they have back home. They will have lots of time to sit with their group, read God’s Word, and allow the Lord to use His Word to touch their hearts.

We want to thank each of you who have contributed in any way to helping us make this trip. There is no way that this trip would be possible without you. You have given us opportunities to work at your homes so that the kids can earn their trip, some of you have sponsored kids who couldn’t pay any of the money, and you have supported us over and above anything that we could have imagined. I can’t wait to get back and share with you the wonderful things God did while we were on the mountain.

In His Steps,

Mike

Update On Connie Hays
We Give Thanks!

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Hi Everyone,

It has been two weeks since Connie had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. We got word a few days after she got home from the hospital that her pathology showed that her lymph nodes were clear, but we didn’t know if she would have to have any further treatment like chemo or radiation. Today, we had an appointment with Dr. Walker, Connie’s oncologist, at the OU Physicians Center. We didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t know whether Dr. Walker would give us an idea of what kind of treatment, if any, we should plan for or if it would simply be a check-up. Dr. Walker and Dr. Lannuel did check Connie’s scars, they read to us from the pathology report once again, and then Dr. Walker said, “I would pronounce you cured.”  I felt like jumping out of my skin, hugging Dr. Walker, and asking her, “Are you sure you said ‘CURED?’  Don’t worry, I didn’t make a fool out of myself. I just quietly praised God for His provision and grace.

Connie will not have to have chemo or radiation, but she will have to visit Dr. Walker once every three months for the next two years for check-ups and tests as a precautionary measure. After the two years are up she will have to visit Dr. Walker once every six months for the same tests.

Needless to say, we are so grateful to the Lord for His graciousness towards our family. It is interesting that Connie and I were sitting in the waiting room to see Dr. Walker and I was reading a quote by Phillip Yancey. I showed it to Connie because it speaks so vividly of our experience during the past month. Yancey says, “What is faith, after all, but believing in advance what wil only make sense in reverse.”  That statement strikes at the heart of our experience. I will never forget one month when i walked into my house and Connie told me she had cancer. I was shocked, my heart raced, and I was afraid. I couldn’t see the future. I had no idea what was before us. I only knew to pray and trust God. Now looking back over the past month I see His fingerprints every where. God has been so good to us. He ordained this trial to teach us to trust Him and to battle fear whenever it raised its ugly head.

When Connie and I got back to my truck after meeting with Dr. Walker we held hands and prayed, thanking God for all that He had done in our lives during the past month. We prayed for Dr. Walker and Dr. Lannuel who will meet with many “Connies” in the months to come and asked Him to bless them so that those in need could feel the compassion coming from them that we have felt. We also thank God for each of you who have prayed for us, cooked us meals, sent flowers to Connie, signed a jillion cards and letters, and most of all, loved us through it all.

God is good. Not just when the Doctor announces that you are “cured,” but He is good all of the time and His purposes for our lives are to use us to bring glory and honor to His name. Connie and I have prayed that He would use us in this trial to do just that.

Dr. Bruce Waltke at BCC
Sunday, March 25, 8:30 am

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

We have been given a wonderful opportunity to hear one of the greatest Bible teachers in America and we don’t have to travel anywhere to hear him. Dr. Bruce Waltke will be teaching at Britton Christian Church on Sunday, March 25, at 8:30 am. Dr. Waltke has written several Bible commentaries, helped create the NIV translation of God’s Word, has served as a professor at several seminaries, and has taught the Bible throughout the world during his lifetime. I hope you will take advantage of this unique opportunity to hear Dr. Waltke teach from God’s Word.

On Sunday night, March 25, at 6 pm Dr. Waltke will also speak at Metropolitan Baptist Church (7201 W. Britton Road) in a city-wide worship service. He will speak on Sunday night on a different Scripture than he will be teaching from while at our church so we have two opportunities in one day to hear this humble, yet brilliant man of God teach from God’s Word.

Thanks For Your Prayers

Monday, March 5th, 2007

 Dear Friends,

It was so good to see everyone at church yesterday and to be able to give you an update on Connie’s health. For those of you who weren’t able to be with us on Sunday let me briefly share with you what I told our church yesterday. On Friday, February 16, I got home from church and Connie told me that her OBGYN had called and that her biopsy had come back positive–Connie had cancer. I was shocked to say the least. We called Brian Geister, an Oncologist at Baptist and a member of our church, to ask him what we should do. Brian encouraged us to call Dr. Walker or Dr. Mannell at the OU Physicians Center. I called the following Monday and two days later Connie was in Dr. Walker’s office. Dr. Walker said that uterine cancer just didn’t make sense for Connie’s age, small size, etc. She ran more tests and found a tumor the size of a plum in Connie’s uterus. Surgery was scheduled for the following Tuesday, February 27.
Connie and I were both overwhelmed by the number of folks who came to Mercy Hospital to be with us before and during Connie’s surgery. We are so grateful to all of you who prayed with us before the surgery and for those who sat with me and my sons during the surgery.
When the surgery was over Dr. Walker came out to talk to our family and she told us that the tumor was the size of a peach, the cancer had spread to Connie’s cervex, and that she took Connie’s lymph nodes to be biopsied. She said Connie’s lymph nodes looked “plump” for someone her size, but that wasn’t necessarily bad. It didn’t sound good to me at the moment.
Connie got to come home from the hospital on Thursday afternoon and she was very weak and unstable. Not more than an hour after we got home we received a phone call letting us know that Connie’s lymph nodes had come back clean! Hallelujah!  The doctor said that we could not have gotten a better report.
Connie will have an appointment with her oncologist in two weeks to find out if any further treatment is necessary. So we will continue to wait and see. This whole experience has been a time of waiting.
Connie and I are learning so much through this experience. We are learning to wait upon the Lord, not on good reports or bad reports, but to wait upon the Lord. We are also learning how faithful the Lord is in every situation. We look back on the past two and a half weeks and we see the Lord’s fingerprints everywhere. He has truly ordered our steps and for that we are most grateful. While Connie was being prepped for surgery Kathy Harris walked into her room and Connie’s eyes lit up. She said, “Are you going to be with me in surgery?” Kathy said, “I sure am. I will be with you the whole time.”  Kathy is a wonderful surgery nurse and a godly woman who has been at BCC for many years. Seeing her wonderful smiling face gave Connie comfort at the right time. Dr. Geister has walked with us throughout our whole experience and having his expertise, encouraging words, and prayers have been another sign of God’s provision for us. God is faithful!  Thanks so much for your prayers and support.
The last two weeks have been very difficult for us in not being able to share with all of you what was going on in our lives, but we want you to know that we withheld information so as to protect our kids. Connie was 11 years old when her dad got cancer and she remembers what a scary time that was for her. Our daughter, Annie, is 11 and we wanted to wait until we knew definitively what was going on before we told her. We were so blessed to be able to tell Annie the good news on Friday of last week after her mom got home from the hospital. We did tell our sons, Dan and Nate, the day before the surgery so that they would know what was happening as we went into surgery on Tuesday.
I will be away for awhile so that I can take care of Connie and get her back into shape. I told her today that I am her “personal trainer.”  I’ve got her walking around the yard, eating three meals a day (even when she doesn’t feel like it), and taking lots of Vitamin C. We are continuing to pray and seek comfort and direction from the Lord. Psalm 188:8 says, “It is better to find refuge in the Lord than to trust in men.”  I am learning how true the Psalmists words are. Know that I am praying for all of you.
In His Steps,
Mike
