Friend Day @ BCC
Sunday, November 2

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I am so pumped! I can’t wait until Sunday to meet all of your friends and to have you meet mine. “Friend Day” at BCC has been the source of such great memories for me through the years and I have been praying that this year’s “Friend Day” will top them all.

I know that you are inviting your friends to join us for worship on Sunday morning, but I want to remind you to invite them to join us for breakfast at 9:30 am in the gym. This will give us an opportunity to meet one another’s friends and get to know each other better.

Another important part of “Friend Day” is our Britvil Food Drive. If you will bring sacks and sacks of nonperishable food items to church with me we would greatly appreciate it. All of the food items will be donated to the Britvil Food Pantry which serves lots of hungry folks in our community each and every week. Have a super day and pray with me that “Friend Day” will be a life-changing day for all of us.

In His Steps,
Mike

Everyone Wins!

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Wow! Our Bedlam Blood Battle this morning was a huge success! I want to thank Janice Marlow and her tireless efforts to organize our Blood Drives each year. Janice, you are amazing and we appreciate you!

We normally have between 15 and 20 people sign-up to donate blood when we have a blood drive, but today we had 30 people give blood for the Bedlam Blood Battle. You aren’t going to believe this. You are going to think that we are giving some kind of “PC” answer to the question, “Who won?” When all of the needles were put away and the final count was tallied–we had a tie! Everyone won today!

That’s not the way it will turn out in a few weeks when the Sooners visit Stillwater to play the Cowboys. Somebody has got to win that battle, but today everyone won. Most importantly, those who are in need of blood are winners! Thanks to all of you who gave today.

Next Sunday is “Friend Day.” We are going to have a super day of worship and fellowship for everyone. I’m praying that you will make contact with your friend and invite them to join you this coming Sunday. Remember that we will have breakfast at 9:30 am instead of our normal Sunday school classes. Be sure to invite your friend to join us for breakfast. This will give our staff an opportunity to meet your friends and thank them for coming to “Friend day.” I’m praying that lives will be changed on “Friend Day.”

In His Steps,
Mike

Go Greens!
Bring Back The Gold Ball

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I’m “bachin” it this weekend. That means lots of Little Debbie’s, Big Mac’s, and Blue Bell at my house. Connie and Annie arrived in Mobile, AL today where Annie and her team will play for the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championship. Annie plays for the 14 and Under Advanced team at The Green’s Country Club and her team is competing against 31 other teams from across the nation for the gold ball.

Annie’s team won the Regional Championship here in Oklahoma City and then went on to win the Missouri Valley Championship in Topeka, KS. back in July. Winning the MV Championship earned them the right to go to Mobile where they will compete October 23-26 against the other teams from across the nation. You can keep up with Annie and her teammates by clicking here — USTA Jr. Team Tennis website. Keep Annie and her teammates–Sarah, Shali, Jay, Braxton, and Sam, as well as their coaches, Tim Shanahan and Marina Robinson, in your prayers. I know they are going to have a great time.

Two weeks from today we are going to have “Friend Day” here at Britton Christian Church. For the past ten years or so we have always had “Friend Day” on the Sunday that we set our clocks back one hour. We do this because church growth gurus tell us that on time change Sunday there are more unchurched people in church than any other Sunday outside of Christmas and Easter. “Friend Day” is an opportunity for you and me. An opportunity to spend a few weeks in prayer asking the Lord to show us which of our friends we should invite to worship with us. For those of you who are new to BCC let me give you a little direction about “Friend Day.”

• First of all, please do not invite your friends who already have a church home. We are not trying to pack out the sanctuary or take folks away from the church where the Lord is using them. “Friend Day” is an intentional effort to draw us together for one purpose on one Sunday. That purpose is to invite our unchurched friends to share in worship with us.
• Secondly, I want to encourage you to join me in beginning to pray this very morning about who the Lord would have you invite to church on November 2.
• Third, when you decide who you are going to invite to church spend time in prayer asking the Lord to give you the right words to say and for your friend to be receptive to your invitation.
• Last of all, invite your friend to join us for breakfast at 9:30 am and for worship either at 8:30 or 10:40 am. Inviting your friend to breakfast gives our staff the opportunity to meet them and welcome them to “Friend Day.”

We came…we saw…we conquered!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

After serving the local Indian Mission this past Sunday, the high school youth decided to head up to Guthrie to blow off a little steam, which they did…and I have the bruises to prove it. At the same time, Heather Meldrum and Ashley Henderson escorted the middle school up to Incredible Pizza after serving at the mission and I have heard nothing but good reports. The kids love to serve at the church each month and it shows because we have a record amount of students each month; therefore, I ask each of you to pray that God would continue to be gloried through this youth group!

I wouldn’t cross these guys/gals.

Under Control
Romans 8:5

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

“I’ve got it under control.” Have you ever heard that statement? Better yet, have you ever spoken those words? “I’ve got it under control” is one of the greatest misnomers in the English language. We use the phrase to try and convince those around us that we are just fine, that we’ve got it together, and that there’s no need to worry. The phrase is most often used when things seem to be out of sorts in our life or when others are concerned for us. In today’s lesson we will learn that whenever we are in control we are most assuredly out of God’s will. Let’s take a look at our Scripture for today found in Romans 8:5.

5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

(Romans 8:5 NIV)

No Condemnation. None.
Romans 8:1-4

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

The story is told of a young man who was the son of a friend of Czar Nicholas I, the Emperor of Russia from 1825-1855. The young man had been given the responsibility of collecting revenues for the government at a border fortress for the Russian army. It was a very important position in which he was to manage the czar’s money and dispense wages to the troops.

The young man liked to gamble, but he wasn’t very good at it. He began to lose money and he didn’t have the funds to cover his loses so he began to cover his losses by borrowing money from the army’s treasury. One day he received word that the government auditor was coming to examine the books. The young man’s heart began to race as he knew that the books wouldn’t balance so he sat down to try and find out how much he had taken. When he came up with a total he began to count his own money to see if he could cover the shortage. He wrote on a piece of paper how much he owed the government and how much money he had. He subtracted his money from the shortage and took notice of the great difference. Under the amount due he wrote: “A great debt: who can pay?”
