Anticipating The Gift
Luke 2:22-41

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Christmas, for a child, is full of anticipation. Am I right kids? What are you excited about today? That’s what I thought—Christmas! For those of us who are older, do you feel that same sense of enthusiasm and excitement about Christmas today? Not quite huh? Well, can you remember those days? Can you remember the days gone by when you went through the J.C. Penny Christmas catalog and circled all of the things you wanted for Christmas? Can you remember how excited you were about decorating the Christmas tree? Can you remember baking cookies with your mom and setting them out with a glass of milk on Christmas Eve to help Santa make it through the night? Can you remember waking up on Christmas morning and finding what you had asked for under the tree? Wasn’t that the most magical moment of the year for you? It sure was for me.

Lighthouse Christmas Concert
Extravagant Love!

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Hi Everyone,
Here is another highlight from our Christmas Concert on Sunday. The girls worked so hard on their dance to “Your Love Is Extravagant” and everyone in attendance was overwhelmed by God’s extravagant love shown to us at Christmas.

BCC “Lighthouse Christmas Choir Concert”
Sunday, December 14, 10 am

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Christmas is on its way! In just over two weeks Christmas Day will be here. Presents will no longer be beautifully wrapped and neatly placed under the tree. There will be paper and bows littering living rooms all across the country as kids break out in a rash of smiles in having received their long awaited gift.

Sometimes the greatest Gift of Christmas gets lost in all of the paper and bows. It is so important that we, as followers of Jesus, never lose sight of the greatest gift of all–The Gift of our Savior. In order to help us remember, this Sunday, December 14, at 10 am our amazing choir will lead us in worship as we remember the gift of God’s Son. The Lighthouse Choir’s Christmas Concert has always been one of the most moving and inspirational experiences of the year. This year promises to be another wonderful celebration!

You will want to arrive early this Sunday because the sanctuary is always packed out for the choir’s concert. I want to encourage you to invite your friends to join us as we celebrate the birth of our Savior with a wide variety of music.

I also want to encourage you to park in north parking lot, just south of Hope Community Church, so that we will leave parking spaces close to the church for those who need to park close and for our visitors. Have a great week and I’m looking forward to seeing you Sunday.

In His Steps,
Mike

Welcome Our Newest Members

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to welcome Jim and Myrna Steele to BCC! Just over one month ago, one of the members of BCC met their new neighbors, Jim and Myrna. She invited them to come to church. Today Jim and Myrna came forward to join the fellowship of believers at BCC. What an awesome story! We have no idea how the Lord might use our simple invitation in someone’s life.

Jim and Myrna moved to Oklahoma City from Brownsville, Texas. The reason for their migration north is to be near their kids and grandchildren. I am so thrilled that the Lord has led the Steele’s to BCC and I hope you will let them know how thrilled you are as well.

The Beacon is Online

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Beginning in January we will no longer mail out The Beacon. We are trying to do our part to save paper and ink, which will help us to cut costs as well. We will send out an email, to all of those on our email list, at the beginning of each month, to let you know that The Beacon is now available on our website. You can access the current Beacon by clicking on the link in the right hand column of this website.

We are doing a test run during the month of December for those of you who have already received your Beacon. I want to encourage you to get the word out that folks can now access The Beacon from anywhere in the world! Have a great day.

In His Steps,
Mike

Who Are We?

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Good Morning,

I’ve read “mission statements,” “purpose statements,” and “vision statements” from many churches through the years. Most are very good. Some are very intricate and detailed. Others are short and sweet. These “statements” give the people in the pews, as well as the staff, a clear and decisive understanding of “who” they are and “what” they’ve been called to be and do as the people of God.

I was reading a book the other day called, “Simple Church.” The author’s idea is that simple is far more effective than complex. I totally agree. Reading the book led to my rethinking “who we are” and what God has called us to be and do in our community. I probably sound like a broken record but my take on these questions has not changed through the years.

We are called to be a Lighthouse of Hope. To teach God’s Word and love God’s people…all of God’s people.

I absolutely love the simplicity of God’s call for us as the people of BCC. 21 little words. Yet, those few words translate into limitless possibilities. How do we live out those 21 words? Well, we teach God’s Word through Bible studies, Sunday morning worship, one-on-one conversations, and much more. How do we love God’s people? All of God’s people? I don’t have the space to list all of the ways that we are currently implementing that call of God, but they vary from folks volunteering at HIS Kids, The Middle School Learning Center, Brit Vil, and the King’s Klinic to providing Christmas for kids whose parents are incarcerated to… On and on the list goes.

Did you know that according to Focus On The Family, the average stay of a pastor is between 2.5 and 3.5 years? I’ve been at BCC for over 18 years now and I’m having the time of my life! How can I still be having fun, feeling challenged, and loving what I do after so many years in the same church? The answer is quite simple–the mission God has called us to is so simple yet limitless in its implementation. We’ve witnessed the Lord do so much through the years through BCC, yet in many ways I believe we have just scratched the surface. I’m convinced that God isn’t through implementing His plan for BCC in our community. The future is bright! The future is exciting! The future is full of possibilities to let His light shine through BCC!

I hope that you will begin to pray about how you fit into the beautiful picture of ministry that the Lord is painting before our very eyes. 2009 is going to be a great year of possibilities for BCC and your involvement is crucial. Have a great week.

In His Steps,
Mike

Our Family is Growing!

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Sunday morning was such a great day of worship! I absolutely love Sunday morning! I love lifting my voice and praising the goodness of our God. I love digging deep into God’s Word and sharing with all of you the lessons that He is teaching me. I love bowing our heads and pouring out hearts out for those in need.

These are exciting times as we get to watch the Lord continue to work in our church and community. One of the ways that we see Him working is how He is continually drawing folks to share in what is happening at BCC each week.

On Sunday we welcomed Jason, Emily, Bo, Ella, and Jack Dowling to BCC. Jason and Emily are here in OKC while Jason is doing his residency at Baptist Hospital. He and his wife, Emily, have three beautiful children.

We were also blessed to welcome Malaina Vivona to BCC. Malaina began attending BCC when she met her husband, Kevin. Malaina and Kevin are a blessing to so many of us at BCC. We are thrilled that the Lord has led these wonderful folks to the fellowship of BCC.

I hope you will take the time to welcome Jason and Emily and their family as well as Malaina. It is so awesome to see how the Lord leads people our way so that we might bless them and encourage them to be a blessing to those around them. Have a super week and I will see you on Sunday.

In His Steps,
Mike
