Collaboration

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Collaboration is a hot word in our society today. Collaboration is defined as “The act of working together; united labor.” Collaboration is the talk of the town, or should I say, the talk of the nation today. The President is calling for collaboration among Democrats and Republicans. Corporations are collaborating to try and build better, more user-friendly products for consumers. Universities are collaborating with communities as they try and influence their students to be more community minded. Collaboration is taking place every day and in many ways across our society.

The key for collaboration’s success is for all of the parties involved to put aside their need to be first and work for the success of the group’s effort. I have been a part of collaborative efforts in the past that failed because one party wanted their way more than they wanted the group to move forward together. Remember, collaboration is “The act of working together.”

I can think of no better place for collaboration to succeed than the Church. We are the Body of Christ. Regardless of whether you are Episcopalian, Baptist, Methodist, Church of God in Christ, Catholic, African Methodist Episcopal, or Presbyterian–we are all Disciples of Christ. Paul put it in plain speech when he wrote,

17 If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body… 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. (1Corinthians 12:17-20; 27 NLT)

There are so many beautiful differences within the Body of Christ that should be celebrated, but far too often those beautiful differences have been used to divide rather than enhance the presence of the Body in the world today. I have friends who would fit into each of the denominations that I listed above. We are different, make no mistake about it, and yet our unity is in found in our one belief that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, our glorious Savior. I want to celebrate the differences of my brothers and sisters, learn from their unique perspectives which have been formed by their experiences, personalities, and God’s call upon their lives, and work side-by-side with them so that our divided society can see the unity of the Body of Christ.

My prayer is the Body of Christ will come together in this year like never before. That we would recognize that we have a “song” to sing that the world desperately needs to hear. In the video that I’ve attached you can see the varied faces and voices from all over the world that chose to come together to make something memorable. Let us, the Body of Christ, come together, let’s collaborate, to sing the song of our Savior so that the world may know the joy, peace, purpose, and salvation that is found in Jesus alone. This is my desire, but I can’t do this by myself. I need you to stand by me. Sing it!

Life Change Ballroom Dancers
These Kids Make You Want to Dance!

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Hi Everyone,

One of the best kept secrets in Oklahoma City just happens to be a group of young people from our community who make up the Life Change Ballroom Dancers. These kids are amazing! If you work with the Study Buddies or Middle School Learning Center programs then you already know how talented, and full of life, these young men and women are. If you have never met any of these wonderful guys and gals then you will want to meet them after you check out the latest video from their recent competition at Rose State College.

There are several adults who work with the kids each week, but I want to give a special shout out to Cindy Pipkin and Tami Brammel who have hearts bigger than Dallas for the kids of our community. You ladies inspire me! I’ll stop typing so you can concentrate on the kids dancing.

The Assurances of God
Romans 8:12-17

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Throughout God’s Word we find many, many assurances given to us by God. The word, “assurance,” is defined by various dictionaries as, “Something said or done to inspire confidence, as a promise, positive statement, etc.; A statement or indication that inspires confidence; a guarantee or pledge;” and “Freedom from doubt.” I can’t begin to list all of the assurances, or promises, that God has provided for you and me in His Word, but I can list just a few to set the stage for the study of our Scripture for today.

First of all, I hear so many people characterize God as first and foremost a God who is angry, wrathful, and vengeful and it troubles me. It troubles me because there is no explanation about why God’s anger flares. It is like someone characterizing you as angry and not explaining that your anger flared because someone took advantage of someone you love. With all of the false information that is offered about God, my troubled heart is quieted when I read in God’s Word that He loves us. Take a look at 1 John 4:8-10 with me.

8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

The Walk
Romans 8:5-11

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

This week we are finally getting back to our study of Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome. We took a break from Thanksgiving through the New Year, but now I want to encourage you to join me as we will dig deep into Paul’s letter for the foreseeable future.

It is so amazing to me how God uses my life experiences each week to shed light on the Scripture that I am studying. This past week has been another affirmation of God’s desire to teach me. Let me explain to you what I am talking about. All week long I have been studying Romans 8:5-11. In these verses Paul makes it very clear that, from God’s perspective, there are only two types of people who inhabit the planet. Let’s read our Scripture so that you can see what I am talking about. Read with me beginning in verse 5.

The Road to Healing a Broken Heart
Grief Conference
February 6-7

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to let you know about a very special opportunity that is coming our way on February 6 from 6-8 pm and February 7 from 9-12 noon. For many years Lisa Curtis has led our GriefShare ministry at Britton Christian Church. GriefShare has been an unbelievable blessing to many, many people who have suffered the loss of a loved one or friend.

“The Road to Healing a Broken Heart” Grief Conference is the next step for us as a church in reaching out to those who are often suffering in isolation. Our guest speaker for the weekend will be Dr. Harold Ivan Smith. Dr. Smith is a nationally known popular speaker and grief educator. He received a Doctorate of Pastoral Care from Rice Seminary and a Doctorate of Spiritual Formation from Asbury Theological Seminary. Dr. Smith has published more than 30 books and numerous articles, including A Decembered Grief, On Grieving the Loss of a Father, On Grieving the Loss of a Mother, and When Your People Are Grieving (Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City).

The conference will kick off on Friday night at 6 pm with a wonderful catered meal for all of those in attendance. Following our meal, Dr. Smith will share with us some valuable tools that we can use to help those we know who are grieving their loss. On Saturday morning at 9 am we will begin our final session with Dr. Smith with coffee and donuts. Following our time of fellowship Dr. Smith will share with us from his years of experience in working with those who have suffered the loss of a loved one or friend. There is comfort and strength for those who will lean upon God’s grace in their times of deep sorrow. Dr. Smith is an amazing communicator of God’s grace.

It is my prayer that those of you who read this blog will tell your pastor, stop by Britton Christian Church and pick up posters and registrations form, and join us on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7. For more information about the conference you can call (405) 848-2046.

Prayer for a New Year

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Hi Everyone,

A new year has come! So many folks look upon a new year with great hope that it will somehow be different from all of the previous years. That somehow they will escape the trials and tribulations of life. My prayer for the new year is a deepening of our faith in the Sovereignty of God, a more stable confidence in God’s perfect plan for all of our lives.

I am like everyone else. The trials of life rattle me, take my focus off of my Father, and blind me to the ever-present work of His Sovereign hands.

Most people want to start the new year strong. I’m not as concerned as starting strong as I am with finishing strong–totally surrendered to my King.

I was reading 1 Samuel 11-12 this morning. I noticed that Saul, the first King of Israel, started strong, but we don’t remember him for how he started, but how he finished, or failed to finish. Lord, let us run the race today with our eyes fixed upon you and give us the confidence in you that will enable us to cling to you whatever may come.

In His Steps,
Mike

Tell Them
Matthew 28:16-20

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

For the past several weeks Christmas has been in the air. The sounds of Christmas have echoed throughout the mall, the doctor’s office, the grocery store, and all over the airwaves. It has been impossible to escape the sights of Christmas in Oklahoma City. In some neighborhoods the Christmas lights have been so beautiful and plentiful that it looked like the stars had come down to dwell among us. The Christmas ribbons and bows let everyone know that a birthday party was on its way. Christmas has been inescapable and I’ve loved it.

I went shopping with my daughter a few days after Christmas and I noticed something. It was like Christmas had never happened. The lights in the stores were gone, the carols had been silenced, and the ribbons and bows had disappeared. For weeks I had been reminded of the celebration of the birth of our Savior as I walked the aisles in stores all over the city. In some of the most unexpected places I heard…
