In Genesis 4:6-7, God is trying to prepare Cain for what’s ahead. In His infinite wisdom and eternal gaze, God could see the depth of Cain’s heart. God had refused Cain’s offering and this upset Cain very much. However, as the prophet Jeremiah stated, “the Lord does not cast off forever” (Lam. 3:31). God reached out to Cain to encourage him. “So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it” (Gen. 4:6-7). This message is for all of us.
On Tuesday, aour 4th grade and above Summer Buddies kids got to visit the Murrah Building memorial. What a tragic event. And still, this memorial stands as a reminder to many that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:38). We don’t know how or when most times, but we can still trust God to help us to be OVERCOMERS. It also stands as a reminder to us that “sin lies at the door”, but God has given us the victory that we “should rule over it.”
On Thursday, our 3rd grade and under Summer Buddies kids got to visit the National Cowboy & Western Hertiage Museum to learn about how Native Americans OVERCAME many of the hardships they had to endure. They learned how, cowboys and Native Americans alike, survived on a fraction of what we now take for granted. They made necklaces and walked the dusty streets of the Ol’ West! Such a fun week full of enlightening experiences. All of these things should help them appreciate their liberty this weekend!
Our kids are learning that, according to God’s promises, “Everyone who is born of God OVERCOMES the world, and this is the victory that has OVERCOME the world – our faith” (1 John 5:4). We can know victory when we know Jesus, but we will have no victory if we have no Jesus!
