Hmm. How close?
Hmm. How close?

10 Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close. (Psalm 27:10 NLT)

I was talking to a young friend of mine who has had a rough start to life. His father was murdered and his mother is not a part of his life. His situation breaks my heart. I’ve known so many kids during the years I’ve been at BCC that have been left to deal with the challenges of growing up without the benefit of a father, many without the benefit of a father or mother. Many of the kids I’ve known have been heartbroken and their brokenness oftentimes manifested itself in anger. This has certainly been the case with my young friend I was talking to recently. Even though I can’t relate to what it must be like to grow up without a mom or dad to be there to teach, love, encourage, and share their own life experiences, I can sure empathize with his situation.

During our conversation my young friend told me about an experience he had recently. He had been given a Bible and he was reading it one night when he read Psalm 27:10, “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.” Tears filled his eyes as he told me the story. His father is gone, his mother is not around, but the LORD is holding him close. Oh, how I wish each and every one of us could come to know that truth as well as my young friend.

After I listened to his story, I said, “There will be tough times that you will go through in life, but if you will always keep the promise of this verse before you, then you will be alright—The LORD will forever hold you close.

Maybe you still have your mother or father near, but some other close relationship that you enjoyed and treasured at some point in your life is no more. Maybe someone really close to you chose to walk away. Maybe you’ve never met your father or your parents gave you up for adoption. Please hear me, “…the LORD will hold you close.” He has, He is, and He always will.
