Hebrews 4.1212 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NIV)

Throughout time the Bible has been banned, burned, and bantered about as a book, nothing more than a book, written by people. Most people in our time hold to this belief about the Bible. Dan Brown, the author of The New York Times “Best Seller,” The Da Vinci Code, written in 2003 and having sold more than 80 copies has had many things to say about the Bible, Jesus, and people of faith. In 2009, he released The Lost Symbol, which sold more than one million copies on the first day of its release. In the book, Dan Brown’s main character, Robert Langdon, a Harvard University professor of religious iconography and symbology, says, “You can point to the alleged miracles of the Bible, or any other religious text, but they are nothing but old stories fabricated by man and then exaggerated over time.” (Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol) That’s it! Langdon voices what many believe in our society today, yet for the followers of Jesus the Bible is much more than “old stories fabricated by man and then exaggerated over time.”

God’s Word has done more than survive the attacks of skeptics, it has radically altered, transformed the lives of countless men and women in every age, from every societal strata, in every nation, and from every walk of life. Kings and cobblers, laborers and lawyers, politicians, philosophers, and plumbers, grade school children as well as post-doctoral students—all have found their lives set on a new course because of what they’ve found, or rather “Who” they found, in the pages of God’s Word. D.L. Moody once said, “The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.”

God’s Word alone can get to the very heart of the matter of our lives and that is the matter of the heart. Doctors can examine us, psychologist can analyze us, and counselors can advise us, but only God’s Word can reveal to us the deepest issues of our life and then set us on a new course of following God’s will. God’s Word truly is “alive and active.” God’s Word truly is able to get down to the deepest places of our lives so as to judge the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts. I pray that we will commit to spending time in God’s Word each and every day.
