“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” -1 Corinthians 15:58
It sure was a blessing being with Grams and the rest of my family over Thanksgiving. Our family knows Grams is coming to the end of her life, so we decided to put together an appreciation video in her honor. Each family member was asked to answer the following question: “How has Grams’ legacy lived through you?”
As Grams watched the video, she was visibly touched and you better believe there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when it was all said and done. Everyone had so many great things to say about her because of her loving nature, warm hospitality and radical generosity. As I thought back, some of my fondest memories revolved around my weekend trips to Grams’ house, which is why I also may have cried during the ceremony – don’t tell.
My grandpa was also a great man. He was the one who started Fisher Ranch in Eufaula. He was also a respectable businessman, but honestly I, and many of my family members, didn’t connect with him like we did with Grams. He tended to be a little too business minded sometimes and he seemed to be a little tightfisted, which was quite a contrast to Grams. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Grandpa; however, I fear he may have labored in vain in some ways. A lot of his time, energy and resources went into the ranch but I don’t know if he put that same time and energy into people.
Keep investing in people! I know business is important. I know sports and TV can be addicting. I’m sure there are plenty of chores to do. Nonetheless, I pray you remember what’s of eternal significance – people! Grams gave completely of herself in order to bless others. She lost sleep, time, energy, money and I’m sure a little bit of her sanity, yet her labor was not in vain. Our family loves and serves the Lord because of her dedication to the greatest commandments!
You are also building a legacy! Whether you realize it or not, you are investing in eternity by giving of yourself so that others may know the abundant life. As a result, life change is happening even though you may not see evidence of this right now. In fact, you may not even receive any appreciation, but it makes no difference. God sees! Plus, He is the one who causes the growth. You just keep planting the seeds by doing the work of the Lord.
Thank you MENTORS for all you do! I pray God gives us all the steadfastness to live out His holy calling.
