14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. (Ephesians 4:14 NIV)

Any time I read, “then,” in God’s Word, it reminds me that I need to go back and read what came before the “then.” In this instance Paul has just finished describing how the Body of Christ is supposed to function. Those who are preachers, teachers, and proclaimers of the truth of God are to equip the other members of the Body so that the entire Body may be built up, strengthened. In doing this, the entire Body of Christ will grow in unity and knowledge of the Lord as they go about doing His work.

As we follow God’s design for the function of the Body, we will no longer be duped by crazy theologies and smooth talking preachers with charisma and charm oozing from every pore. It is pretty evident that we are failing in what comes before the “then” because many of the followers of Jesus are being led astray in droves in our day.

Just a couple of years ago, Harold Camping, set a date for the end of the world. People emptied their savings accounts to finance the building of billboards all over the world. These were well-meaning people. They were sincere people. They were faithful people who felt that what Camping was saying had to be “right,” but they were duped by a deceitful leader. It wasn’t the first time that Camping had set a date and been found wrong, but I hope it will be the last.

When will we learn that Jesus was right when He said, 15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” (Matthew 7:15 NIV) They may speak with authority. They may be able to stir people’s emotions. They may even be right now and then, but the reality is that they are nothing more than wolves in sheep’s clothing. Rather than cling to electrifying leaders or leaders who seem to have an inside track with God, we need to cling to God’s Word. God’s Word has never been wrong and neither will it be.

My prayer today, Lord, is for Your Body. May we commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the lessons You have given us in Your Word so that we might not be led astray.
